We Will Not Be Quiet

Once again the little things seem charmless to me in the face of images of children cowering, terrified in bunkers, old ladies feeling the need to arm themselves with assault rifles and tanks being paraded through the streets of Ukraine. Why should I have the freedom and enjoyment of the mundane when a few hours flight away, a dictator is at work, feeding his ego with the blood of innocents?

Like a vulture, this foul being has chosen this moment because the world is at its weakest. Crippled by the physical and socio-economic effects of the pandemic and propagated by weak and confused leadership, world conditions were ripe for the birth of this monster. Just as Hitler exploited the effects of the Great Depression and the economic fall out that ensued, so too is Putin. As in the case of Hitler, all the signs that this was coming have been relatively ignored until it is too late.

We have seen this man’s aggression, his bravado, arrogance and willingness to showcase his power before. This is not his first attack against Ukraine. In 2014 when the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted during the Revolution of Dignity, Putin launched a devastating attack by land, sea, air and cybernetworks against an already reeling nation. Their new found freedom and increasing ties with the West, threatened this paltry little man’s ego, in the same way that an abused wife, finding her feet and gaining independence offends an abusive spouse. The Soviet Union has not existed for some time, but the very idea of it’s shadow being erased by Westernization greatly offended this braggart.

The 44 million Ukrainian people are his neighbours. Think about what that means. Many of them speak Russian. Have Russian ancestors or family members and friends. But they are an independent nation. Their land belongs to them. They have a history unique to them. A culture. What right has he to inflict suffering upon them because he fears he will lose face somehow by their affiliation with Western powers? None whatsoever. The world is not going to accept his towering amour propre and rampant aggression. This noisy little yapping dog will be put back in his kennel. Not by our leaders. No. But by the moral outrage and disgust of the common people around the globe. Including those demonstrating on the streets of his very own country that he currently threatens with charges of treason.

Screw you Putin.

We will not be quiet.
